Welcome to Gone Zooing
This is how we zoo it…
Wow, this place is a zoo! And not just because we’ve got animals from anteaters to zebras in our midst. We’ve also got people, from administrative staff to zookeepers.
Behind the scenes, this wonderfully diverse group of people are working together every day, 365 days a year, to ensure that Roger Williams Park Zoo continues to be the place where New Englanders and tourists alike come to wonder at wildlife, learn about the natural world, and of course, HAVE FUN!
Take a peek at postings from our educators, zookeepers and other zoo-folk, and get a unique inside look at what it’s like to experience the zoo from the other side. And check back often as zoo staff reports on the latest zoo news, including animal births, upcoming events, conservation updates, fun family programs and more.
Happy zooing!!

We’re currently doing preliminary work on our new polar bear exhibit, and expect it to open in 2012. You can find out more at our master plan website, http://www.thenewzoo.org. Glad to hear you’ve been enjoying the Zoo, and hope you’ll be visiting again soon! (Our Flutterby: Butterflies in Bloom exhibit is back for a second and final season this summer, May 9 – Sep 7 – check it out!)

Hi! I just have to say I really love the zoo and go whenever I get a chance. I was just curious to know if you had a place on the website where you have a list of all of your animals and their names. If you don’t I think that would be an interesting addition. Also, if you could tell me the name of your red panda I’d really appreciate it!

Hello Allison,
So glad to hear that you’re enjoying the Zoo! Currently, we do have a listing of all the species of animals on our website (http://www.rwpzoo.org/what_to_see/exhibits.cfm ), but we do not list individual animal’s names anywhere. That’s certainly something to keep in mind for the future though, so thank you for the suggestion!
In answer to your other question, our red panda’s name is Jiang, which translates to “ginger” in Chinese. He will be getting a female counterpart to share his exhibit very soon, so look for her on your next visit!

My friend and I went to visit your zoo last Sunday (August 8) around noon, and the cars were so backed up trying to get in the park that we gave up and drove to another zoo in another state. I’m thinking perhaps we were too hasty. How many parking spots do you actually have?
Any tips on what we should do for a return visit?
I don’t know Providence very well, and my GPS was going crazy, so I didn’t dare venture too far away looking for additional parking.

Hello,
Thanks so much for coming to visit our Zoo – I’m sorry that you cut your trip short! The Zoo has three lots to park in, all located at the main entrance to the Zoo. In addition, should those lots fill up, there is parking along the road in the Park. I’m not sure exactly what caused the traffic on the day you visited, but sometimes if there’s a big event going on out in the Park, that can contribute. However, on the vast majority of days, there is ample free parking available. I hope you visit again soon!

Hello,
i am 4 years old and want to enter name the penguin chicks contest. i thought of two names: the girl’s name could be Penelope and the boy’s name could be Quinn. When you put them together they would be Pen-Quin. What do you think?

Hello Nicholas,
That is a great idea for naming our penguin chicks! To enter the contest though, please ask a parent to go to this page on our website: http://rwpzoo.org/what_to_see/humboldt-penguin-chicks-naming-contest.cfm and enter the names in the official entry form that is linked there. (The age is also linked from our homepage at rwpzoo.org, if you’d rather go there instead of typing out that long address!).
Thanks for your great suggestion and we hope you’ll be visiting the Zoo to see the penguin chicks soon!
